ONESIMUS: A LIFE TRANSFORMED BY GRACE
The name Philemon in Greek means 'full of love'. He was a prominent citizen in the city of Colossae who owned several servants, one of whom was named Onesimus. Literally, the name Onesimus means 'useful' or 'profitable'. However, reality proved to be the exact opposite; Onesimus had run away and stolen property from his master, an act of betrayal that deeply harmed Philemon. Yet, nothing happens by accident within the sovereignty of God. During his flight, Onesimus met the Apostle Paul in prison. Through Paul's ministry, Onesimus received Christ and his life underwent a total transformation. That encounter became a turning point that changed his status from a useless servant to a dearly loved spiritual child of Paul. Even though Paul desperately needed Onesimus's help, he did not hold him back for personal gain. Instead, Paul sent Onesimus back to Philemon to forge reconciliation, pleading with Philemon to receive him back no longer as a guilty slave, but as a beloved fellow believer.
