STOP NORMALIZING VIOLENCE
The world often resolves disagreements and maintains power through intimidation, coercion, and physical or mental violence. We frequently witness how powerful people silence criticism by force, while society remains silent because such behavior has been normalized. Oppression is legalized under the guise of pseudo-stability, and injustice is accepted as an unavoidable reality of life. However, Scripture firmly rejects this compromising attitude toward actions that degrade human dignity. When facing an unjust trial and institutional violence, Jesus did not simply surrender in silence or retaliate with hatred.
In John 18:23, Jesus openly protested when a temple guard slapped His face without any valid legal basis. His response was not a foolish passivity that perpetuates evil, but a rational demand that the integrity of His actions be tested honestly. Jesus demonstrated that defending truth does not require returning violence with violence, yet it must never be done by allowing injustice to pass unchecked. His protest serves as a moral resistance against arbitrariness often wrapped in religious or political authority.
As followers of Christ, we are called to live in a broken world without imitating the manipulative and abusive methods practiced within it. We are often tempted to react similarly when corneredโreturning insults with insults, or using power to oppress the weaker ones. In reality, refusing to normalize violence requires immense moral courage to speak up rightly and gracefully. Our presence in the workplace, family, and society must be a beacon of justice that rejects all forms of covert oppression.
Today's Reflection Points:
- Examine Reaction Motives: Evaluate whether our responses when attacked or humiliated stem from a wounded ego or a commitment to truth.
- Reject Tolerance of Oppression: Have the courage not to ignore minor injustices around us that have long been normalized by social habits.
Let us learn from the firmness and gentleness of the Master, who remained in full control during the most unjust of situations. May the Holy Spirit grant us discernment and courage to continually voice the truth without losing love. Do not let our consciences grow dull toward the various forms of violence surrounding us. Live as children of light who bring both peace and tangible justice.
God bless you!
