"Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good."
HE MUST INCREASE
Human ambition has always revolved around securing a stage, maintaining influence, and ensuring one's own name is remembered by the masses. Our default nature is fiercely allergic to unpopularity, defeat, and standing as a runner-up hidden in someone else's shadow. John the Baptist stood before a starkly different reality when his own disciples began to protest as crowds shifted to follow Jesus. Instead of growing jealous or guarding his mass following, John uttered a statement that overturned every worldly logic of success. This declaration was not merely sweet poetic phrasing on paper, but a daily principle of total death to self that must be lived out.
In ministry, it is deeply exhausting when we secretly crave human applause and validation for our hard work. We often wear the cloak of spiritual service while our hidden motive is expanding our personal kingdom rather than God's. John understood precisely who he was; he was merely a passing voice, while Jesus was the eternal Word. A voice must eventually fade after delivering its message so listeners can fix their eyes directly on the true Owner of the message. When Christ grows larger in our thoughts and decisions, the room for self-interest naturally shrinks away.
Allowing Christ to increase means we must surrender the right to defend ourselves, let go of our prestige, and release control over the reputations we fought so hard to build. This is a painful daily process for our flesh, yet it radically liberates the soul from the crushing burden of image-building. The world may forget our names, and that is completely fine, as long as the Lord is worshipped and exalted through the rest of our days. Death to self is the sole gateway into the resurrection power of Christ working without hindrance in our lives.
Today's Reflection Points:
- Evaluating Ministry Motives: Examine whether our involvement in God's work aims to showcase our own capacity or purely declare His glory.
- Willingness to Be Small: Train the heart to accept being overlooked and criticized without immediately jumping to self-defense, letting God be our defender.
Let us bring this rebellious heart before His throne of grace every morning. May the Holy Spirit erode every filthy ambition of the flesh and replace it with a pure longing to see Christ reign fully. Our lives are far too short if spent merely chasing fleeting praises that vanish with time. May His grace empower us to keep stepping back so that He alone shines brightly before others.
God bless you!
