JOY IN THE MIDST OF SUFFERING

Instinctively, human beings do everything possible to avoid pain. When hardship knocks on our door, our first impulse is usually to seek the quickest exit. Yet, from a cold and damp Roman prison cell, the Apostle Paul penned words that sound utterly foreign to modern ears: 'Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you'. How could intense suffering and the loss of personal freedom become a fountain of profound spiritual joy?

Paul was not endorsing masochism or romanticizing distress. When he speaks of filling up what is behind of the afflictions of Christ, he is by no means suggesting that Christ's sacrifice on the cross was incomplete. The redemptive work of Jesus on Calvary is fully finished once and for all. Rather, Paul refers to ministerial suffering—the cost that the Body of Christ must bear as the Gospel is proclaimed to a hostile world. Suffering for the sake of truth is never a meaningless void; it is the sacred space where the tangible love of Christ is manifested to His people.

In our day-to-day lives, we might face misunderstanding for upholding biblical integrity or feel exhausted while continuing to show love to those who hurt us. Yet this passage reminds us that suffering born of faithful obedience is never wasted. As Paul declared in Philippians 1:21, 'For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain', our existence finds its richest weight when every burden we carry is offered for the glory of Christ and the good of His church.
