THE LORD IS PEACE

Amidst the fear and threat of the Midianites, Gideon felt helpless and overwhelmed. However, when the Lord addressed him and provided His promise of presence, that fear transformed into a soul-soothing assurance. In that very place, Gideon realized that God is not only the giver of victory, but the very Source of all peace.

The name "Jehovah-Shalom" reveals the character of God who imparts true peace to humanity. The Hebrew word "Shalom" means much more than the absence of conflict; it encompasses wholeness, completeness, soundness, and spiritual well-being. When Gideon built the altar of Jehovah-Shalom, he celebrated the restoration of man's relationship with God, bringing perfect tranquility in the midst of a threatening situation.

In our daily lives, anxiety often arrives uninvited due to financial strain, health struggles, or broken relationships. Yet, trusting Jehovah-Shalom means allowing the peace of Christ to rule in our hearts beyond human understanding. We do not have to wait for problems to disappear to experience peace; rather, we carry God's peace to face every problem before us.

THEME: YHWH-SHALOM: EMBRACING DIVINE PEACE IN TIMES OF DISTRESS
Scripture: Judges 6:24

I. HISTORICAL & LITERARY CONTEXT
Judges 6 is situated in the dark, cyclical period of Israel's spiritual decline. Because of their disobedience, the LORD handed Israel over to the Midianites for seven years. This oppression was so severe that the Israelites sought refuge in mountain dens, caves, and strongholds. Gideon, belonging to the weakest clan in Manasseh, was threshing wheat in a hidden winepress out of intense fear of Midianite raiders—a vivid picture of anxiety, helplessness, and emotional distress.

In the midst of this threat, the Angel of the LORD appeared and addressed Gideon. After Jehovah promised His divine presence and miraculously consumed Gideon's offering with fire, Gideon realized he had seen the Angel of the LORD face to face. Overwhelmed by the dread of death, the LORD spoke to him: "Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die" (Judges 6:23). In an act of faith and worship celebrating this covenant restoration and divine assurance, Gideon built an altar there and named it 'Jehovah-shalom'.
