UNDERSTANDING THE HEART OF GOD
Passage: 'Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.' – Exodus 3:1-6
Have you ever felt stranded in the wilderness of life, far from past grand dreams and trapped in seemingly meaningless routines? Forty years in Midian surely felt like an exile for Moses. From an educated prince of Egypt, he became a foreign shepherd in a lonely land. Yet, it was precisely in this ordinary place and amidst daily mundane duties that God chose to speak. God had never forgotten His covenant promises, and He used the silence of the wilderness to prepare Moses' heart to grasp and understand His divine desire.
In Exodus 3:1-6, God revealed Himself through a bush that burned with fire yet was not consumed. This phenomenon was not merely a visual miracle, but a symbol of God's holy presence amidst human frailty. A thornbush—an ordinary, worthless plant—could blaze with heavenly glory without being destroyed because God was in its midst. When Moses decided to turn aside and pay attention to God's work, the Lord called his name: 'Moses, Moses!'. Here we learn that understanding God's heart begins when we are willing to pause our busyness, remove the 'shoes' of self-reliance and pride before His holiness, and recognize Him as the God who is eternally faithful to His covenant of redemption.
Understanding the heart of God demands humility to approach Him on His terms, not ours. Taking off our shoes signifies surrendering our control over our lives, acknowledging God's absolute holiness, and submitting to be transformed into instruments of His redemption. Today, amid work routines, family struggles, or felt loneliness, God is calling you from the midst of your daily bush. His heart longs to restore, redeem, and send you forth as a bearer of hope to a broken world.
