WHAT DO YOU HAVE UNRECEIVED

Passage: 'For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?' – 1 Corinthians 4:7

A subtle temptation often creeps in while we survey the fruits of our labor: a quiet sense of satisfaction that gradually turns into pride. We look at a healthy bank account, a hard-earned promotion, or a thriving business, and whisper to ourselves, 'I built this through my own grit and intellect.' Unknowingly, we push God off the throne of our hearts and seat our fragile egos in His place.

The Apostle Paul shatters this disguised pride with three searching questions in 1 Corinthians 4:7. He reminds us that absolutely nothing in our lives originates from ourselves. A sharp mind, skilled hands, the stamina to work, and even the freedom to breathe this very second are all undeserved gifts showered from heaven. When we forget to give thanks and begin to boast, we mirror the foolish rich man in Luke 12, who hoarded treasures for himself but remained spiritually bankrupt before God.

Ingratitude is the seedbed of spiritual darkness. Romans 1:21 warns that when humans refuse to glorify God or give Him thanks, their thinking becomes futile and their foolish hearts are darkened. The root of pride is not merely overconfidence; it is a practical denial of God's providence. Yet, whenever we pause to look at creation or enjoy our daily bread, God's goodness shines clearly, calling us to bow in humble gratitude for His sustaining hand.
