CHRISTMAS IN A WICKED HEART
The announcement of Jesus Christ's birth was designed by Heaven as supreme good news for all humanity. That grand joy was even expressed directly by the heavenly host praising God on Christmas night. Yet, not everyone welcomed this news with gladness. King Herod responded to the Savior's arrival in the exact opposite way. The presence of the Baby Jesus did not bring peace to his heart; instead, it generated anxiety and terror. Herod felt his throne was threatened, filling his heart with jealousy, malice, and murderous intent. More chillingly, Herod used religion as a cover, consulting the scribes regarding prophetic scriptures not to worship the Messiah, but to manipulate information in order to eliminate Him. Hypocrisy and political ambition turned his heart into that of a cold-blooded murderer. When we refuse to surrender the 'throne' of our lives to Christ's leadership, biblical correction will only make us feel disturbed, threatened, and anxious just like Herod. Never exploit scripture or spiritual activities to cover up hidden motives or personal gain; God can never be deceived by hypocrisy. Let us examine the deep recesses of our hearts today to weed out any seeds of malice, anger, bitterness, or distorted ambition before God.
