RESCUING A GENERATION FROM THE DIGITAL PRISON
Let us take a hard, honest look at what is unfolding inside our homes today. The sight of children sitting alone for hours, their eyes glued to phone screens, has become a normal routine. Often, because we seek instant quiet after a long day at work or because we are consumed by our own affairs, we let a smartphone become our surrogate parent. Without realizing it, we are raising a generation that is physically sedentary, socially awkward in face-to-face conversations, prone to anxiety, and spiritually dull because of a steady diet of digital entertainment. A child left to drift, spending their days lying around with a gadget, is burying deep the golden potential that God has entrusted to them.
The Apostle Paul gives us an urgent warning in Ephesians 5:16: 'making the most of the time, because the days are evil'. In the original Greek text, the phrase 'making the most of the time' uses the verb แผฮพฮฑฮณฮฟฯฮฑฮถฯฮผฮตฮฝฮฟฮน ฯแฝธฮฝ ฮบฮฑฮนฯฯฮฝ (exagorazomenoi ton kairon). The root word Exagorazo means 'to redeem' or 'to buy back at a cost', while Kairon refers to a precious, fleeting window of opportunity. Paul is asserting that time is a divine gift we must snatch back from futility. As parents, if we fail to wrest the time of our children away from the grip of the smartphone screen, this world will gladly steal their entire hearts, character, and future away from God's path.
Let us take concrete action today to rescue our children from the spiritual numbness bred by digital isolation. Channel their energy into productive non-academic pursuits and build warm, engaging conversations at home. This young generation is far too precious in God's sight to spend their lives flat on a bed with a glowing screen.
