RUTH: UNYIELDING LOYALTY THAT TRANSCENDS CULTURAL BOUNDARIES
In a world driven by transactional relationships—where people only offer kindness when there is a tangible return on investment—the story of Ruth shines like a rare gem. As a young Moabite widow, she chose to stay with Naomi, her mother-in-law who was also widowed and impoverished. In the Book of Ruth, the defining keyword that encapsulates Ruth's radical action is חֶסֶד (Hesed). This term is rich with meaning, encompassing steadfast love, mercy, covenant commitment, and fierce loyalty. Historically, the Moabites were bitter enemies of Israel. Yet, Ruth bound herself to the God of Israel through her declaration: עַמֵּךְ עַמִּי וֵאלֹהַיִךְ אֱלֹהָי ('ammeḵ 'ammi welahayiḵ 'elohay / 'Your people will be my people, and your God will my God'). Ruth completely stripped away her old identity to take refuge under the wings of YHVH, even though human logic dictated she would become an impoverished minority in Bethlehem. Consider this: is our love for family, spouses, and neighbors still fueled by hidden motives? Learn from Ruth, who expressed love through concrete action and fidelity during the darkest seasons. Furthermore, God takes note of such loyalty. Ruth's radical choice placed her directly into the genealogy of King David and ultimately the Messiah, Jesus Christ. God never closes His eyes to genuine sincerity. Let us treat today as a precious opportunity to sow goodness without expecting repayment, becoming extended hands of blessing to those around us who are walking through difficult valleys.
